HISTORY OF NHL
The Beginning:
History of NHL is related to the information on the organization of professional sports compiled hockey teams in US and Canada, from the date of inception, which is 1917. It is very tantalizing to comprehend that history of hockey has initiated and ended with the NHL. Infact, not much is heard about older leagues such as World Hockey Association, Pacific coast Hockey Association and the Canadian Hockey Association. Portage Lakers were first professional hockey team basically from Houghton Michigan. The team was coordinated in the year 1902, almost 15 yrs previous to the NHL formation.
The Rise of NHL:
NHL’s initial professional players were the people working in companies, who sponsored the amateur teams. Majority of such teams were from Canada lumbering, farming and mining towns. With the end of century, the amateur hockey got transformed into a popular sport and even the unusual players tried to earn money by playing the sport. Infact, the earning was more as compared to regular jobs. These teams played for the National Hockey Association. During 1909, NHA teams and Canadian Hockey Association hired the expertise of professional players. The NHL got constituted in the month of November on a very chilly day, in the year 1917. While, the historians mark 22nd Nov 1917 as the beginning day, only after 4 days on Nov 26th, 5 clubs joined officially the NHL.
Miscellaneous:
The NHL 5 leagues were Quebec Bulldogs, Montreal Wanderers, Ottawa Senators, Toronto Arenas and the Montreal Canadians. At present, NHL is very popular particularly amongst the Canadians.
